Biba and Beyond: Barbara Hulanicki

It's really hard to start explaining the several layers that make up both the exhibition 'Biba and Beyond: Barbara Hulanicki' at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and her work, influence and importance. So I'll give you a quick overview of what to expect from the exhibition - that is a MUST SEE - without giving away too much and I'll point you (in another post)what I found deeply interesting and fascinating by someone - like me - that is just sinking into the vintage charm (as you know) and trying to incorporate it in my styling work
P.S. If you want to see more pictures and maybe read (in Italian?) check my article for Fashion News Magazine.

The first room (of the three) and section of the exhibition is about Hulanicki childhood, her family moving to Brighton, studying fashion illustration and design and starting her career in fashion both as an illustrator for WWD, Vogue and Tatler and as a designer. She won a competiton for best design in beachwear for the Evening Standard in  1955 and propelled into stardom after she being featured into Daily Mirror article in 1964, together with pink gingham dress and headscarf she designed to go with it, that got 17,000 orders after it was seen in the newspaper.

The second section is about the Biba brand and branding. From the logo, the defining aesthetic of her designs to the thoughtful interior design and visual display of the shops up to the creation of the Biba 'lifestyle' brand through make up, stationery, lentil and coffee tins. Even the staff at the beauty counter had to have a precise look t,hat she carefully draw, and wear an uniform (obvious things now but not in those days).

Last but not least, in the third section we can see the work of Hulanicki after she lost the Biba trademark and she got back to work ranging from interior design in Miami and fashion collaborations with quite a few brands ( Topshop and George by Asda being the most recent) as well as establishing her own label simply called 'Barbara Hulanicki'.

There is still SO MUCH to say about her and the exhibition but I don't want to be a bore so I suggest you go personally to see it and take it all in - it's quite an effort but it is worth it. In the next post I'll point some interesting and fascinating facts about the exhibition and I'll be less didascalic than this: PROMISE!
