Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama collaboration.

Yesterday I went to the Tate Modern to see the much talked about retrospective exhibitioon of Yayoi Kusama, whom I heard a lot about also because she's collaborating with Louis Vuitton for a series of items -bags, clothing and jewellery - that will be out in July.

But first things first. Yayoi Kusama is a avant-garde Japanese artist, in her 80ies now, that explored many media, paintings, collages, installations and live performances and  whose characteristic trademarks are the dots and the repetition of simple, graphic patterns. She went to the US in 1957 and got involved in the ealy '60 in the ectic New York scene with the likes of Andy Warhol, Cles Oldenburg, George Segal and James Rosenquist.

Her work is dominated by frequent and sudden changes of style and media and the overall impression that I had, navigating through the 14 rooms at the Tate, it's that she was obsessed, if not desperate to emerge, to be seen and make her self marketable and successful.
I didn't find most of her things striking I partciularly enjoyed the series of 'Infinity Net' paintings , the room installations 'I'm Here, but Nothing' and 'Infinity Mirrored Room'.

There are not previews yet of the Kusama/Vuitton collaborations but back in 1998 Mark Jacobs met the artist in Tokio and she painted and signed a Vuitton bag.

There is also a recent Macobs interview about their partnership and a website dedicated to it with some background information but the product section still to come.

I do hope that Vuiton will use the 'Infiny Net' prints and concept or some other less obvious Kusama signature feature rather then the crazy multi-colored dots that are all over the place right now and not really a novelty anymore. A clue may be the white spots on red background that are both on the giant balloons hanging from the exhibition entrance and entire 4th floor and on the website as well. ;-)
