High Street to Catwalk and back: Rihanna for River Island,Topshop, Whistles

Last night, quickly browsing the latest LFW collections, I realised that three high street names were there: River Island, Topshop and Whistles. To be fair it has to be said that Topshop Unique has been showing for the past four years, but never the less, seeing three high street brands joining the fashion pack and not just following it; setting their trends and not copying or rielaborate them, it's quite a change that needs to be noted.

Ieri sera, mentre scorrevo velocemente le ultime collezioni della LFW, ho notato che c'erano anche tre nomi della high street: River Island, Topshop and Whistles. Ad essere onesti bisogna dire che Topshop Unique sfila da quattro anni, ma nonostante cio' vedere tre brand 'di massa' unirsi al gruppo di  chi crea la moda invece di seguirlo; stabilire i trend invece di copiarli e/o rielaborali, e' un cambiamento che va notato.

RIHANNA FOR RIVER ISLAND

The great thing about this 'collection' is that it is clearly and honestly presented as a collaboration; so we do know that Rihanna, like other celebrities didn't really sketch or draped, but gave her creative input and ideas to the River Island team. You can see that in two behind-the-scenes videos that show how passionate she is about the project and into it. Great wearable looks, on trend and really 'Rihanna'; sexy but not trashy, comfortable but not shabby.

L'aspetto interessante di questa 'collezione' e' il fatto che sia stata presentata in maniera chiara ed onesta come una collaborazione; sappiamo quindi che Rihanna, come tante altre celebrities, non ha disegnato bozzetti o drppeggiato stoffe, ma ha dato il suo input creativo ed idee al design team di River Island. Cio' si vede nei due video 'dietro-le quinte-' che mosrtano quanto Rihanna sia appassionata al progetto e coivolta. Look indossabili e belli da vedere, trendy e molto 'Rihanna'; sexy ma non volgari, comodi ma non sciatti.

 

 TOPSHOP UNIQUE

Nineties inspired looks, a bit of grounge, oversized silhouttes, textures and accents of colours and sparks. That's the AW13 Unique collection that once more mixes urban and cool together.

Ispirazione anni'90, un po' di grounge, silhouette oversize, textures ed acenti di colore e di scintilii. Questa e' la collezione Unique AW13 that nuovamnete unisce e mixa urban e cool.

                                                                       WHISTLES 

A schizophrenic collection with too many different looks trying to be a bit of everything: urban, casual chic, BCBG and quirky. The garments and the looks, if considered one by one, are nice and versatile but as a collection unfortunately they don't really work.

Un collezione schizofrenica con troppi look diversi tra loro che cerca di essere un po' di tutto; urban, casual chic, BCBG e sbarazzina. I singoli capi ed i singoli look, presi uno ad uno, sono desiderabili e versatili ma nell'insieme della collezione, purtroppo, non funzionano.

London Fashion Week A/W 1 - First Collage

Allo stesso modo in cui vi ho presentato la NYFW con un 'Pick 'n Mix', passo in rassegna alcuni dei designer che fin'ora hanno sfilato alla LFW con un collage delle loro ispirazioni. In senso orario il Brasile Urbano di Clements Ribeiro, la Belle du Jour di Fyodor Golan, gli anni '60 di Orla Kiely e il film Dune di Jeanne Pierre-Braganza. Un modo per presentarvi una selezione veloce piuttosto che ignorare questi designers e le loro collezioni.

Marc Jacobs: the Sun and the Prada effect.

Nel post di ieri sulla NYFW vi ho presentato una veloce carrellata di outfit di alcune collezioni; un 'Pick 'n Mix' fatto apposta, una strategia per cercare di trovare qualcosa di interessante :-( Come ogni stagione aspettavo che sfilasse Marc Jacobs - la cui collezione Marc di Marc Jacobs, anche se non entusiasmante al 100%, e' stata comunque divertente e una bella rilettura degli anni '70.

La collezione della linea principale? Un piccolo shock; per molteplici motivi.

Prima di tutto per il fatto che piu' che seguire un tema o un'idea, il filo conduttore degli outfit e' un mood, un sentimento. Un sentimento malinconico, nostalgico, quasi dark, sottolineato da un grande sole arancione ( che tramonta? che sorge?) ispirato dall'istallazione di Olafur Eliasson di qualche anno fa.

In my last post about NYFW I presented a quick selection of few outfits from some collections; a 'Pick 'n Mix' I did on pourpose, a strategy to try to find something interesting :-( Every season I wait for Marc Jacobs to show - whose Marc by Marc Jacobs collection, even if not 100% thrilling, it was fun a great reworking of the 1970's.

The main collection? A little shock; for several reasons.

First of all, instead of following a them or an idea, the outfits' file rouge was a mood, a sentiment. A melancholic, nostalgic one, almost dark, underlined by the big orange sun ( that was setting? or rising?) inspired by Olafur Ellisson's installation of few years ago.

Inoltre la collezione, proprio perche' veicola uno stato d'animo, e' difficile da 'leggere' al primo impatto e bisogna guardarla e riguardarla; e qui scatta l'effetto Prada. Non solo infatti e' possibile vedere come non mai l'influenza di Miuccia su Jacobs, ma look dopo look non sapevo se stavo guardando una sfilata (gia' vista) Miu Miu - e' il look sulla destra - o Marc Jacobs oltre a ritrovarmi a dover fare cio' che si fa dopo una sfilata Prada: prendere tempo, riflettere, guardare e riguardare e poi apprezzare. Sto aspettando che esca il video della sfilata per apprezzare meglio cio' che gia' e' disponibile in foto, poiche' sulla recensione di Style.com ho letto che le modelle hanno sfilato due volte; la prima con il sole che rendeva gli abiti un po' tutti uguali e monotoni, e la seconda con un sole dal bagliore piu' intenso che rivelava le diverse textures e colori degli outfit, in un esplosione di sfumature cangianti e bagliori metallici.

Then the collection, mainly because it communicates a mood, it's difficult to 'read' at first sight and you need to look at it over and over; here the Prada effect kicks in. It's possible, in fact, not only to see really clearly Miuccia's influence on Jacobs, but look after look I didn't know if I was watching (an already seen) Miu Miu show - that's the look on the right in the opening pic - or a Marc Jacobs one but I had to do what you do after a Prada show: take your time, reflect, watch the show over and over and then like it. I'm waiting to see the show on video to appreciate better what's in pictures, because on the Style.com review of the show, i read that the models paraded twice on the catwalk; the first time with the sun that made them look all the same an flat, the second with the sun much more bright that revealed the different textures and colours, on an explosion of iridescent hues and metallic glares
