FW15 Comfy Knits.

Even though it's still a bit early to thinks about knitwear, the rainy and stormy weather of the past few days makes you want to snuggle up and cover up a bit more. Here some lightweight knits for her and him that are great items to layer over a vest/cami top ot a t-shirt/polo when it suddenly the temperature drops and it's a bit chilly. 

Anche se e' ancora un po' presto per pensare a maglie e maglioni, i temporali e le tempeste di questi ultimi giorni ci fanno venir voglia di accoccolarsi e coprirsi un po' di piu'. Eccovi dei capi di maglieria leggera per lei e per lui ideali da indossare sopra dei top/canottiere o t-shirt/polo quando all'improvviso la temperatura cala e fa freddo.

SS15 Trend File - Back To The '70. Colours, Prints&Patterns.

'What goes around comes around'...ehm, yes that's the 2009 Justin Timberlake hit song but in this post I'll be talking about the '70 trend that not only is coming back for the SS15 season but it was also my first ever moodboard and fashion shoot I did back in 2011 when I was sill in Rome studying fashion styling.

In the past three weeks at work we had a drop of '70 items - palazzo pants, lacey top, bardot tops, '70 prints and crochet cover ups. Before I take you through what to buy, I found out that I already had three moodboards ready for the '70 styling - that is the work I did in 2011 with the addition of  three '70 iconic comic characters women; Wonder Woman, Penelope Pitstop and the Italian Eva Kant.

What you can take with you from the moodboards is a guide on key colours, prints and patterns that can guide you through your shopping around and styling the pieces you have picked once at home.

'A volte ritornano'...ehm, si e' il titolo di un film dell'orrore del 1981 ma in questo post mi riferisco al trend anni '70 che non solo torna per la stagione SS15 ma e' stato anche la mia ispirazione per il mio primo moodboard e fashion shoot nel 2011 a Roma quando ancora studiavo styling.

Da tre settimane a lavoro abbiamo  capi anni '70 in vendita - pantaloni palazzo, top in pizzo, top Bardot, stampe anni '70 e cover up all'uncinetto. Prima di darvi una panoramica su cosa acquistare, mi sono ricordato che avevo pronti tree moodbors sullo styling anni '70 - e' il lavoro fatto nel 2011 con l'aggiunta di tre personaggi iconici del periodo; Wonder Woman, Penelope Pitstop e Eva Kant.

I moodbaodr qui sono sono una guida sui colori, le stampe e le fantasie tipiche del periodo che vi daranno una mano nello shopping in negozio e poi nello styling una volta a casa.

Cinderella Yourself. Cinderella Style For SS15.

Il blockbuster Cenerentola e' su migliaia e migliaia di schermi da ieri, in Italia e nel resto del mondo e la fiaba - versione Disney - oltre a raccontare l'evoluzione del personaggio, da umile e maltrattata sorellastra a principessa perfettina, illustra anche i diversi tipi di abbilgliamento che Cenerentola indossa a secondo del momento e dell'occasione in cui si trova. Ecco una versione 2015 di come essere una pricipessa da mattina a sera, indossando outfit da lavoro-ufficio e abiti da sera ed eleganti.

The blockbuster Cinderella film is on thousands and thousands of screens from yesterday worldwide and the fairytale - Disney version - not only tells the evolution of the main character , from humble and badly treated step-sister to perfect princes but it shows also the different styles that Cinderella wears in the different context and moment of the story. Here's a 2015 version of how to be a princess from day to night, wearing stylish workwear and evening dresses.

New Year Wardrobe Detox

I don't know about you but I never have NY resolutions. I have long term goals but not a list of resolutions to hit in the next 12 months. A great start to the year though can be done by 'detoxing' your wardrobe both with clothing that you know you won't be wearing anymore or that don't really work with building different outfits. 

I have to say that I generally buy really little but I end up with a mountain of stuff all the same because of work. In fact every three months I get a new 'uniform' - 3 tops and 1 bottom - plus a 30% discount on full price items. I do buy the odd item here and there too, so every couple of months I have to detox my own wardrobe and the unwanted items end up in the local charity shop. 

If you do have the need to declutter yours, here are some simple and easy guidelines to follow.

Non so voi ma non ho mai fatto propositi per il nuovo anno. Ho degli obiettivi a lungo termine ma non una lista di propositi da realizzare nei prossimi dodici mesi. Pero' un inizio come si deve del nuovo anno si puo' fare con la 'disintossicazione' del proprio armadio sia dagli abiti che non si indossano piu' sia da quelli con cui non e'possibile crare piu' di un outfit.

Generalmente devo dire che compro poco ma finisco comunque con l'avere una montagna di vestiti a causa del mio lavoro. Infatti ofni tre mesi ho una nuova uniforme -tre sopra ed un sotto - piu' uno sconto del 30% sullo stock a prezzo pieno. Inoltre occasionamente compro cose che mi servono o per occasioni speciali, qua e la'; ogni due mesi faccio pulizia nel mio armadio e cio' che scarto va al 'charity shop'dietro casa.

Se avete bisogno di 'disintossicare l'armadio ecco delle semplici e facili linee guida.

1) Go through every item and ask yourself you have worn it in the past three months. If the answer is 'yes' then you keep it, if it's 'no' it has to go.

2) Be ruthless when detoxing and if an item doesn't fit don't keep it for the when you'll have lost weight or the other way round. The same is true if you are thinking that it may be useful sometime in the undefined future. If it'snot being used it goes.

3) In case you discover that dress/bag/pair of shoes for which you paid a LOT but haven't worn for A WHILE, it means that it'll be of a better use either in a charity shop or,as an alternative, you can think of giving it to somebody you know who may like it AND use it.

These three 'rules' are not  rocket science and are really common sense but it is hard to go by then if you hesitate to follow them and are always thinking that ONE DAY you are going to need/wear those items that have been hanging in your wardrobe for months, if not years.

1) Analizzate un capo alla volta e chiedetevi se lo avete indossato negli ultimi tre mesi. Se la risposta e' 'si' allora lo tenete, se e' 'no' va scartato.

2) Siate senza scrupoli. Se un capo non e' piu' della taglia giusta non tenetelo per quanto avrete perso peso o il contrario. La stessa regola vale se state pensando che prima o poi vi servira' in un futuro lontano e indeterminato. Se non e' in uso, va scartato.

3) In caso scopriate quel vestito/borsa/paio di scarpe per cui avete pagato TANTO ma non avete indossato da UN BEL PO', significa che avra' un destino milgiore o in un 'charityshop o, come alternativa, potete darlo a qualcuno che conoscete a cui piaccia E che lo usi.

Queste tre 'regolette' non solo la scinza infusa ma semplice buonsenso ma sono difficili da seguire se esitate e pensate che UN GIORNO avrete bsiogno/indosserete quel capo che languisce nel vostro armadio da mesi se non da anni.

The Wheel Of Fashion: Choose Sandals, #SayNoToFlipFlops.

The sun is out and so are the maleficent flip flops on both men's and women's feet! If you're not at the beach or at the swimming pool flop flops are a HUGE no no as they are lazy-wear. I do not like in fact the shabby look of the thin sole, cheap, plastic flip flop on both sexes feet and luckily I'm not the only impressionable soul that thinks that: there are few of my colleagues at work that share my view and in the past few days I read two blogs that tackle this very same issue ( here and here).

There are PLENTY of options of sandals for ladies out there and some for men too, even if I have to say that the choice for us is limited to gladiator-woven-Francescan monk-like shoes; but those are better than a lousy pair of flip flops! Choose Sandals, Say No to Flip Flops!

Il sole e' finalmente uscito e' cosi anche le malefiche infradito sui piedi di uomini e donne! Se non siamo al mare o in piscina, le infradito sono un ENORME no no visto che sono abbigliamento da pigri. Infatti non sopporto l'aspetto trasandato che le infradito dalla sottile suola di plastica da quattro soldi danno a tutti e dui i sessi e fortunatamente sono sono l'unica anima impressionabile che pensa cio': ci sono anche alcuni miei colleghi di lavoro e negli ultimi gironi ho letto due blog che trattano di questo problema ( qui e qui).

Ci sono DECINE di modelli si sandali da donna ed alcuni anche per uomini, anche se devo ammettere che la scelta per noi uomini e' limitata a calzture da gladiatore-monaco Francescano-hippie; sempre meglio comunque di un paio di infradito da 'scappato di casa'! Scegli dei Sandali, Di' No alle Infradito!

NDM: La stylist segreta di Kate Middleton

NDM ovvero News D'oltre Manica sara' una nuova rubrica, settimanale (spero) con notizie flash da qui, l'Inghilterra, da dove vivo e lavoro da due e anni e mezzo.

Esordiamo con una notiza riportata su Grazia di questa settimana riguarda la (presunta) stylist di Kate Middleton, che da sempre afferma di non averne una (ufficiale) ma fare tutto da se'.

Su questo blog seguo Kate da quando si e' sposata, dall'analisi del suo abito nuziale, agli outfit 'firmati' Zara' e anche su FNM ho parlato di lei sia in occasione del lancio di una collezione di Issa London da lei ispirata fino alla recente nascita del principino George. Che Kate ed i reali piacciano o meno, non le si puo' negare l'impatto, l'influenza e la 'notiziabilita', che ha cme personaggio. Ma passiamo alla nostra news: la stylist segreta!

Eccola qui, accanto a Kate in un'immagine del 2008, Emilia D' Erlanger, amica di familgia di William dall'adolescenza e amica di Kate dall'Universita', nonche' una delle madrine di George ed interior designer della residenza di Kensington Palace. Bastava guardare non molto lontano per scoprire chi consigliasse su cosa mettere quando.

 

 

Che dire, una certa similarita' si vede tra le due e poi Kate, come ogni altra giovane donna perche' non dovrebbe avere un'amica fidatacon cui fare shoping/da cui aver consigli ed opinioni in fatto di look? Da ora in poi le terremo d'occhio tutte e due.

Style Wars: Abercrombie and Fitch VS Savile Row

In a short-circuit* of events and news, I became aware today of a style war that is being going on the high-streets of London. It's a few days old news that on April the 23rd a stylish protest flash mob happened in Savile Row, the heart of tailoring and 'proper' clothes', to proptest against the opening ,at number 3, of Abercrombie and Fitch, the American casual luxury brand, that is well know for its bare chested models/shop assistants and those Bruce Weber's half naked adverts and shopping bags.

The flash mob was organise by the magazine The Chap that promotes and endorses a way of dressing and behaving reminiscent of the old classic gentleman with a contempory spin into steampunk.

In un corto-circuito* di eventi e notizie, mi sono reso conto solo oggi che una guerra di stile e' in atto nelle strade di Londra. E' notizia di qualche giorno fa che il 23 aprile uno flash mob di stile  ha avuto luogo a Savile Row, il cuore della sartorialita' dell'abbigliamento 'come si deve', per protestare contro la'pertura, al civico 3, di Abercrombie and Fitch, il marchio americano di casual luxury, ben conosciuto per i suoi modelli/commessi a petto nudo e le campagne pubblicitarie e le foto mezze nude di Bruce Weber.
Il flash mob e' stato organizzato dal magazine The Chap che promuove ed incoraggia un abbigliamento eun comportamento reminiscente del classico gentleman con un twist contemporaneo verso il steampunk.

The flash mob had people wearing a wide range of style, from '50 to steampunk, carrying the slogan 'Give three-piece a chance' and ' Save Savile Row from Abercrombie and Fitch' and protesting against the fact that a high-street chain opens up there and agaist the swarms of noisy teenagers that are visitng the shop and spoiling the chich and elgant athmosphere of the area.
The prostest , in my view, goes beyong clothes and style. Saville Row and AF can be described as being on the opposite spectrum of the fashion range.and  the prtest/war involves beliefes and a ways of living.
It is clear reading the ligh hearted but serious Chap Manifesto that gives guidelines for appearance like:

'THOU SHALT ALWAYS WEAR TWEED' and
'THOU SHALT NEVER, EVER, WEAR PANTALOONS DE NIMES'

but also a way of living and beign into the society like:
'THOU SHALT ALWAYS BE COURTEOUS TO THE LADIES' and
 'THOU SHALT ALWAYS SPEAK PROPERLY. It's quite simple really. Instead of saying "Yo, wassup?", say "How do you do?"

All the above as opposed to being sexy flashing your best assets, wearing pantaloons de nimes aka jeans and treating 'the ladies' as potential conquests and speaking in a casual way.

As you may have gathered I'm not a huge fan of AF, and I shouldn't be as I'm way beyond their 18-22 y/o target, and that's mainly because it is quite sad to see how sex it's so obviously used to sell overpriced basic gaments and to see how this basic marketing tool still works.
So, if I'm not able to afford Saville Row suits, at least in the dispute between content and form, I think I'm on the content side of it!


Il flash mob ha visto i protestanti vestiti in vari stili, dagli anni '50 allo stempunk, tenere carteli con lo slogan
'Date al tree-pezzi una possibilita'' e 'Salvate Savile Row da Abercrombie e Fitch' e protestare contro l'apertura di un gigante della high-street e contro le orde di teenagers rumorosi che fanno visita al negozio rovinando l'atmosfera chic ed elegante della zona.
A mio avviso, la protesta va oltre la questione di stile e l'abbigliamento di per se. Saville Row e AF possono essere descritti come antitesi uno dell'altro nel range dell'abbigliamento e la protesta/guerra coivolge anche valori e modi di vivere.
Cio' e' chiaro leggendo il buffo ma serio Chap Manifesto che da delle linee guida su come apparire:


'INDOSSERAI SEMPRE TWEED' e
' NON INDOSSERAI MAI, PROPRIO MAI, PATALONI DI NIMES'


ma anche linee guida di comportamento e di essere coem:
'SARAI SEMPRE CORTESE CON LE SIGNORE' e
'PARLERAI SEMPRE IN MANIERA APPROPRIATA. E' abbastanza sempice in realta'. Invece di dire ''Ehi, come va?', prova a dire ' Piacere, come stai?'


Tutto cio' in contrasto con l'essere sexy e mostrare la mercanzia, indossare pantaloons de nimes, ovvero i jeans, e trattare le 'ladies' come conquiste potenziali e parlare come capita.


Come avrete capito non sono un grande fan di AF, e non dovrei visto che non rientro nel target 18-22, e questo perche' e' abbastanza triste vedere come ancora il sesso e' usato in modo cosi' ovvio per vendere capi basic a prezzi assurdi e realizzare come una strategia di marketing cosi' di base funzioni.
Dunque, se non posso permettermi un completo di Savile Row, posso comunque, nella disputa tra forma e sostanza, dire che sono dalla parte della sostanza!

London Fashion Week AW12 - Street style

You would have already seen tens of street style pictures of  LFW. 

Well..here it is my selection AND my second Photoshop collage exercise. 

Oh yes! I felt that that it was about time that I learnt at least the basics of it as I was being asked So many times if I could use it and last but not least during a job interview. So, here we go...from now on I can say that I can. I'm practising bit by bit every day and I'm confident I'll get better.

Avrete sicuramente visto decine di foto di street style della NWFW e la LFW.

Beh...questa e la mia selezione E il mio secondo collage/esercizio con Photoshop.

Eh si! E' arrivato il momento di saper usarne almeno le basi visto che mi e' stato chiesto UN SACCO di volte e l'ultima volta durante un colloquio di lavoro. Quindi, ecco fatto...da oggi n poi posso dire che sono capace. Sto facendo pratica piano piano ogni giorno e sono convinto che migliorero'.

The pictures I selected are 'real' street style outfits - things you can actually wear and go out with every day - and not poeple that dress up in costume just to be snapped by street style photographers. I really don't like these creatures as they really spoil the fashion street scene and in most of the cases they are not either trendy or fashionable at all...just laughable.

Le immagini che ho selezionato sono outfit 'reali' - che si possono indossare anche ogni giorno - e non sono di persone che si mascherano solo per essere fotografate fuori dalle sfilate. Non mi picciono affatto queste creature poiche' rovinano l'ambiente dello street style e nella maggior parte dei casi non sono ne' trendy ne' di moda....ma solo risibili.

Wallis Simpson and Vogue 1937. A Funny Moment of Fashion and Art.

You would have seen, read and heard about a lot about W.E. the biopic of Wallis Simpson by Madonna, who recently won a Golden Globe for the film song 'Masterpiece'. You would have learnt too a things or two about the costumes in the film and Wallis Simpson life. Among many striking moments in her life there was one where fashion, art and Zeitgeist came together for her eight page spread in Vogue in 1937, in a era when celebrities where not part of the glossies and the star system as today.

The shooting had three geniouses of the time: photographer Cecil Beaton (who I mentioned in yesterday Ascot post), fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli and artist Salvator Dali'.
The pictures had been done on the eve of Wallis marriage to Edward ( who gave up the throne to marry her, as she was divorced), in an attempt to raise her profile to the public eye and portrait Wallis in  reassuring poses and settings...but the results were mixed!



Avrete visto, letto e sentito molto riguardo alla biopic W.E. di Wallis Simpson diretta da Madonna, la quale ha recentemente anche vinto un Golden Globe per la canzone originiale del fim 'Masterpiece'. Avrete anche imparato una cosa o due sui costumi del film e sulla vita della Simpson. Tra i molti momenti importanti della sua vita ce n'e' uno in cui moda, arte e spirito del tempo si unirono in occasione ddel servizio fotografico per Vogue del 1937, in un'era in cui le celebrities non erano parte del fashion system e non andavano sulle riviste patinate.

Il servizio fotografico vide tre genii dell'epoca collaborare: il fotografo Cecil Beaton ( che ho menzionato anche ieri nel post su Ascot), la stilista Elsa Schiaparelli e l'artista Salvator Dali'.
Le foto furono fatte alla vigilia del matrimonio di Wallis con Edward (che abdico' per poterla sposare, in quanto  divorziata), nel tentativo di risollevare la sua immagine agli occhi dell'opinione pubblica ritraendola in pose e contesti rassicuranti e familiari ma...con un risultato a meta'!

Infact one the dresses she was wearing is 'The Lobster Dress' designed by Schiaparelli with the help of Dali' who painted the lobster. Although the dress is gorgeous and the picture is elegant even if forced, the naugthiness of the lobster is there -according to a possible interpretation of Dali's 1936 Lobster Telephone - as sexual reference. Both on the dress and on the telephone the lobster genitalia point at the private parts of the wearer and, in the case of the phone, the mouth.
Cheeky and fun like Dali's always been.

I'm going to see the W.E. film both because I'm a Madonna fan and also because I really want to see the   re-created costumes and jewelleries in it.

Infatti uno dei vestiti che indosso' e' il 'Lobster Dress' (Vestito Aragosta) disegnato dalla Schiaparelli con l'aiuto di Dali' che dipinse l'aragosta. Il vestito e' meraviglioso e la foto elegante anche se forzata ma la malizia dell'aragosta e' li' - secondo una possibile interpretazione del Telefono Aragosta di Dali' del 1936 - come riferimento sessuale. Sia sul vestito che sul telefono i genitali dellaragosta puntano alle parti intime di chi indossa l'abito o alla sua bocca, nel telefono.
irriverente e divertentento come Dali' e' sempre stato.

Andro' a vedere il fim W.E. sia come fan di Madonna ma sopratutto per ammirare i costumi ed i vestiti ri-creati per l'occasione.
