Vogue US September Issue shoot

Lady Gaga may be on the cover of Vogue US September issue but once you browse the enormous tome there's a shoot that is a show stopper: The Custom of the Country. What can I say about it? 

Shot by Annie Leibovitz and style by Grace Coddington!

(It was after I watched her in 'The September Issue' back in 2009 

that I got enlightened about being a stylist).

The concept of the shoot and the location is the life of the novelist Edith Wharton and The Mount - the villa and garden where she live between 1903 and 1908.

Estranged Fashion shoot

I should be used to it by now but I'm not. Having a fashion shoot published after months they have been done. It happened again today with 'Estranged', a shoot I styled here in Sussex back in April. This morning I've been alerted by Bernadette, the model that the pictures were on line, in The Storm Magazine. How nice!

Ci dovrei essere abituato ormai ma non lo sono. Vedere uno shooting pubblicato dopo mesi che si e' fatto. E' successo nuovamente oggi con 'Estranged', per cui ho curato lo styling qui nel Sussex ad aprile. Stamattina sono stato avvertito da Bernadette, la modella, che le foto erano online su The Storm Magazine. Che bello!

The Photocopy Club @ Brighton Fashion Week 2012

Just when you thought that digital and printed media were sorting things out, here a project that completely redefines the landscape of photography, in every sense : from post production to printing and display. 

The culprit is The Photocopy Club,a project started not long ago, being the first exhibiton in December 2011, and really, really successfull. 

Basically photographers are asked to submit their work in a photocopy format. Simple. The submissions are then selected and dispayed once a month at the Photocopy Club base, the Create Studios just behing Brighton Station. Visitors can buy any photocopy they like with prices goign from £2 to 6£, with all the proceedings going towards the creation and the pubblication of a book with the best pictures.

For Brighton Fashion Week, the Photocopy Club commissioned 12 photograher to produce sets of pictures just for the fashion week.

Non appena  pensato che i media digitali e quelli cartacei stessero per trovare ognuno la sua dimensione, ecco che spariglia le carte un progetto che ridefinisce il panorama fotografico., in ogni senso:  dalla post produzione alla stampa e al modo di esporla. Il colpevole e' The Photocopy Club, un progetto inziato non molto tempo fa, essendo la prima mostra del dicembre 2011 e molto ma molto di successo.

In pratica fotografi sono chiamati a spedire volontariamente i loro lavori sotto forma di fotocopie. semplice. I set sono quindi selezionati e messi in mostra una volta al mese nella 'casa' del Phtocopy Club, il Create Studio di Brighton, proprio dietro la stazione. I visitatori possono acuistare qualsiai fotocopia gli piaccia ad un prezzo che oscilla tra i £2 ed i £6, con tutto il ricavato utilizzato per la creazione di un libro sul bprogetto con le migliori foto.

In occasione della Brighton Fashion Week, The Photocopy Club ha commissionato a 12 fotografi dei set fotografici ad hoc.

It was really refreshing for the eyes to see fashion pictures in black and white, without any glossy finish and where the photoshop/retouching wasn't evident. Looking at the grainy photocopied texture of pictures made me think of the time of black and white TV and as kid I used my immagination to give colour to the images on the screen. I found myself doing the same in front of of those potocopied pictures and felt really immersed in each of the ones that I stopped to look carefully. I realised that the photocopy format does really work 1) when the fashion element of the pics is not really obvious  2) in portraits  3) male faces stand out and charm more.

E' stata veramente come acqua fresca sul viso vedere foto di moda in bianco e nero, senza stampa lucida ed in cui Photosho/ritocco non fosse troppo evidente. Guardando le texture sgranata delle foto fotocopiate mi ha fatto ripensare ai tempi della Tv in bianco e nero e a come, da ragazino, usavo l'ommaginazione per dare colore alle immagini sullo schermo. Mi sono ritrovato afare la stessa cosa di fronte a quelle immagini fotocopiate che hanno catturato la mia attenzione.Mi sono reso conto che il format fotocopia funziona particolrmente bene  1) con immagini in cui l'elemento moda non sia troppo ovvio  2) con i ritratti  3) i visi maschili risaltano e affascinano piu'di quelli femminili.

Styling and shooting: Sussex shoot

Can't tell you why it took me nine months before being able to shoot in the area where I live, Sussex, but it's finally happening...tomorrow. I'm so happy and this shoot got me in touch with a great designer that was under my styling radar for quite a while :-)

So tomorrow I'll be going to West Worthing, half an hour from Brighton, where the model will have her hair and make up done and then, address aside, I don't really know much about the location (s) I'll be shooting. Judging from the photographer's previous work it's going to be either by the sea or on the seafornt...but I'm just guessing. The pictures that you see here ( see? I can take pictures Mr Anonymous commentator!) are my styling preparation work for tomorrow with Peter Twiss designs. He's a designer working in the area but with boutiques in London, Bath, Paris and Zurich. The styling it's not 100% what would be shot as changes are in the nature of a fashion photoshoot.

I'll get back to you in a couple of days with some backstage pics and all the credits of the peopel involved .

Non so dirvi come mai ci abbia messo nove mesi prima di poter fare uno shooting nella zona in cui vivo, il Sussex, ma finalmente succedera'...domani. So veramente contento e questo shooting mi ha messo in contatto con un designer che avevo nel mio radar gia' da qualche tempo :-)

Dunque domani andro' a West Worthing , una mezzo'oretta da Brighton, dove la modella sara' preparata, trucco e parrucco, e oltre all'indirizzo, non so nulla della location dove scatteremo. A giudare dai lavori precedenti della fotografa sara' o il lungomare o in spiaggia ma sto solo ipotizzando. Le foto di questo post ( visto? Sono capace di fare foto miei Signor commentatore anonimo!) sono il mio lavoro di preparazione con alcune creazioni di Peter Twiss. E' un designer che lavora in zona ma ha boutique a Londra, bath, Parigi e Zurigo. Lo styling non e' al 100% quello che verra' scattato poiche' cmabi dell'ultimo moemento sono nella natura di ogni fashion shoot. Mi rifaro' vivo tra un paio di giorni con foto di backstage e tutti i nomi delle persone coinvolte.

AltaRoma 7-11 luglio 2011 officially started today and the first event that I attend, as 'on official.backtage photograper, was ' Fashion narrates History, created and organised by Accademia del Lusso to celebrate the 150th year of Italy's Unification in fashion style.

Today it was the Rome branch of the accademia to host the event after Milan, Treviso and Palermo.

AltaRoma 7-11 luglio 2011 è ufficialmente iniziata e il primo evento a cui ho pertecipato, in veste di fotografo 'non ufficiale'-backstage è stato 'La Moda racconta la Storia' ideato ed organizzato dall'Accademia del Lusso per festeggiare i 150 anni dell'Unità d'Italia in puro fashion style.

Oggi è toccato alla sede di Roma, dopo Milano, Treviso e Palermo.

It was a pleasure to be there, as my fashion family is taking shape: I met a consistent number of people I knew and been introduced to some nice ones as well ;-)

I was  at my ease chatting away backstage, chatting the time away, taking pictures and updating with Mariano Sabatelli, a really talented make up artist and hair stylist, Andreea, a model I styled  for some book photos of her, some of my fellow styling course mates and people working for the Accademia.

Here some backstage pictures of the event and shots of the outfits inspired by the Italian flag and the history of the Unification, made by the fashion design students.

E' stato veramente un piacere essere li', poichè la mia 'fashion family' sta prendendo forma: ho incontrato un bel numero di persone che conoscevo e sono stato presentato ad altre molto carine ;-)

Sono stato a mio agio dietro le quinte,chiacchierando, facendo foto e aggiornandomi con Mariano Sabatelli, un talentuosissimo make up artist e hair stylist, Andreea, una modella che ho vestito per alcune foto del suo book, alcuni compagni di corso e studenti e docenti dell'Accademia.
