Fashion and the Flag - Diamond Jubilee at Brighton Museum

Jasper Conran 2009

I just came back from the Brighton Museum where the exhibition Fashion and the Flag opened just a week ago as part of the Diamond Jubilee related events. The 'display features fashions which use the Union Jack as a fabric or design inspiration'. I was really impressed to see such a variety of garments- dresses, jackets, hats, shoes and bags - that haven't been made just in time to celebrate this great year for UK  - a part from the Barbour jacket, made especially for this display -but sfew years ago, to prove that the Union Jack is what a national flag should be: a point of reference, something to be proud of and something that unifies a country and its people. I don't want to be negative towards Italy but, as far as I'm concerned, there aren't many fashion gaments ispired by the Italian flag - apart from those made last year to celebrate the 150th of the Unification.

But let's back to fashion now. In the following pictures you can see a variety of designers and garments, from the classic cuts of Jasper Conran and Temperley London dresses, to the iconic jacket and trenche by Barbour and Acquascutum to less conventional designs by Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. Plus accessories by Moschino, Doc Marten and Stephen Jones.

Anna Wintour in Chanel HC

Just few pics of my favourite outfits that were seen on the red carpet of the Met Gala 2011 for the opening of the Alexander McQueen exhibition 'Savage Beauty'.
Anna Wintour who hosts the event took most of the audience ( not the insiders though) by surprise by wearing a chic and fun Chanel HC dress ;-)

William and Kate and Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen

After weeks of speculation the Bride (yes, with a capital B) dress has been unveiled -in every sense.
Sarah Burton for McQueen!!!
I'm ever so glad that Catherine, from now on, decided for a McQueen dress. That really says something about the update and chic touch that the new Duchess of Cambridge wants to give to roialty.
Even though at a first glance the dress seems very tame, too simple and sober in reallity, to a closer look, the McQueen craftsmanship, excellence and uniqueness are there.
The dress is made of English lace, French Chantilly lace, and ivory and white satin gazar lace and the handmade flowers appliques are real flowers: rose, daffodil, thistle and shamrock (simbols of the four UK countries: England,Wales, Scotlad and Northern Ireland).
Last but not least the hips were padded to give the Bride a curvier silhouette and also a smaller waist line. Clever, innit?

Below some McQueen creations that recall Catherine's wedding dress.

Angels and Demons.

Last night, as I was browsing through a bunch of digital pics of myself, I came across the following ones - which I obviously remembered - but never linked to Alexander McQueen F/W 2010/'11 collection Angels and Demons.
Only the them is similar, nor the beauty or the intention and mood behind the shoots. Nevertheless, I was struck by the coincidence of having thought about, and done, those pics in April 2009, and that stricking outfits.
That's all. It's just my humble and naive tribute to Alexander.

R.I.P. and you'll always be a great source of inspiration for the fashion industry.
