Graduate Fashion Week 2012. Northbrook and Eastbourne shows

Yesterday I had the great opportunity to experience what a Graduate Fashion Week looks like and feels like, after I had a taste of graduate collections at Brighton University few days ago. I made my way to the Earls Courts Two Centre on a grey and rainy day. Inside an explosion of colours and fabrics both at the GFW Exhibition stalls and during the two graduates shows that I watched.

I have to say that it was really exciting to see so many universities in the UK offering BA in Fashion ( designs, promorion, textile, etc...) under one room and showcasing their best talents through past collections, portfolios, sketches and brochures. The place was really busy and buzzing with students ( obviously) already in fashion, younger students with parents browsing around to get as many info as possible and the sponsors stalls - George by Asda and Rimmel. There were also a well-equipped press room and a carreer advice/Cv dropping pop up office for graduates.

Ieri ho avuto la splendida opportunita' di mettere piede alla Graduate Fashion Week e vedere 'che effetto fa' e come e' organizzata, dopo l'assaggio avuto nel vedere le collezioni dei laureandi della Brighton University alcuni giorni fa. Mi sono fatto strada all'Earls Court two Centre in una giornata grigia e piovosa. All'interno un'esplosione di colori e tessuti siatra gli stand della GFW Exhibition che nelle due sfilate a cui ho assistito.

Devo dire che e' stato veramente elettrizzante vedere cosi' tante universita' in Inghilterra, che offrono corsi di moda (design, promotion, textile, etc...) sotto lo stesso tetto e mostrare i loro talenti migliori attraverso collezioni degli anni passati, portfolio, bozzetti e brochure. Il posto brulicava di studenti (ovviamente) di moda, studenti piu' giovano con genitori al seguito che collezionavano e spulciavano i deplient delle varie universita' e gli stand degli sponsor -George by Asda (una linea estra low cost dei supermercati Asda) e della Rimmel. c'era anche una sala stampa attrezzatissima eun ufficio pop-up dove lasciare il proprio Cv o chiedere consigli per la carriera.

At any fashion week it's suicidal to be able to see every show, so this time I decided to pick the one of the local (to me)colleges - Northbrook (in Worthing) and Estbourne. I'm showing you the collections that caught my stylist eye and I'll do a full report on Fashion News Magazine after tomorrow Gala Show ( yes! Going there as well!!).

In ogni settimana della moda sarebbe un suicidio voler vedere ogni sfilata, quindi in questo caso ho deciso di scegleire quella dei college 'locali' (rispetto a Brighton) - Northbrook (a Worthing) e Eastbourne. Vi mostrero' le collezioni che hanno catturato il mio occhio da stylist e faro' un articolo completo su Fashion News Magazine dopo il Gala Show di domani (si! Andro' anche a quello!!).

Up and Beyond. Graduate Fashion Collections @Brighton University

The Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) opens today in London and at the same time the Faculty of Arts of Brighton Uni is showcasing theirs in Brighton from the 9th to the 14th (of June). I had tickets to go to the private view on the 8th but a job interview stopped me from doing so. I went yesterday though.

It's my first close up experience with graduate collections ( I saw Kay Kwok at BFW last week and in Rome in Febraury) and I'll tell you my overall thoughts once I'm done, as I'm off to GFW in London tomorrow :-))

Let's focus on the Brighton Graduates Fashion Collections. I'm not an expert as Style Bubble is dissecting and articulating the ins and outs of a graduate collection, so I'll just tell you some overall impressions which are really positive. In my ignorance, I was expecting to see some really experimental, off the wall collections. I was proved wrong! Infact each collection was highly and thoroughly researched AND as well as being innovate - in terms of cuts and silhouttes, materials and design - each collection was ready to be stocked, bought and worn.

La Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) apre oggi a Londra e in contemporanea la Facolta' di Arte dell'Universita' di Brighton mette in mostra le collezioni dei suoi laureandi dal 9 al 14 (giugno). Avevo biglietti per una preview due giorni fa ma un colloquio di lavoro ci si e' messo di mezzo. Comunque ci sono andato ieri. E' la mia esperienza a stratto contatto con collezioni di fine corso ( ho visto quella di Kay Kwok alla BFW la scorsa settimana e quelle dell'ACM a Roma a febbraio) e vi diro' le mie impressioni finali quando avro' finito, visto che domani vado a Londra alla GFW :-))

Concentramoci sulle collezioni alla Brighton University. Non sono un esperto come Style Bubble nel dissezionare e descrivere anche i minimi dettagli di una collezione di fine corso, quindi vi propongo alcune impressioni generali che sono...molto positive. Nella mia ignoranza, mi aspettavo di vedere collezioni altamente sperimentali e fuori dagli schemi. Come mi sbagliavo! Infatti ogni collezione era minuziosamente studiata e pensata e oltre ad essere innovativa - nei tagli e silhouette, materiali e design - , pronta ad essere presente in boutique, essere comprata ed indossata.

The collections were shown  in a static format: each designer had a space around a large room with sketches and pictures of the final garments on the wall and a shelf with portfolios with their ispiration/moodboard research, business cards/postcards. At the centre of the room there are dummies each wearing and showcasing a garment per collection. I don't know why this year the collections were not shown on a runway - is it budget /money, the willingness to let people have a closer look and approcach to the collections or a mix of both? -, and I have to say that, even though I would love to see the collections ona real person and up and down a runway, I was really glad to be able to browse through the designers portfolios as that's something that doesn't happen very often and that it's not possible during a show, during which you have to gather in few seconds the main features of a collections in terms of design, and ispiration. P.S. There will be a show on the 14th at Candid Arts, Angel, funded and organised by the students.

Le collezioni sono in mostra in un format statico: ogni designer ha un suo spazio all'interno di una sala con bozzetti ed foto della collezione appesi al muro ed un ripiano con raccoglitori contenenti le loro ricerche sull'ispirazione/moodboard, biglietti da visita/cartoline. Al centro della sala c'erano manichini che 'indossavano' un capo per collezione. Non so la ragione per la quale quest'anno le collezioni non sono state mostrate in passerella - questione di budget/denaro, volonta' di dare al pubblico la possibilita' di dare uno sguardo piu' ravvicinato alle collezioni o un mix delle due cose?-, e devo dire che, nonostante mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere gli abiti sfilare, sono stato contento di aver avuto l'opportunita' di sfogliare i raccoglitori dei designer poiche' capita molto raramente e sopratutto non in sfilata, durante la quale in pochi secondi bisogna carpire caratteristiche principali della collezione, ispirazione etc...P.S. Ci sara' una sfilata il 14giugno al Candid Arts, Angel, finanziata e organizzata dagli studenti stessi.
